November 18, 2004 – First Layout Photos
People have asked why there haven't been any new construction photos
since May. The fact is, once the benchwork was built and the track laid,
the changes became much less dramatic. Scenery goes much slower than the
heavy construction involved in building the underlying framework. But work
certainly continued, and on this page we provide the first look at some of
the finished scenery on the new HO-scale BSME layout.
The city of Bellingham is clearly taking shape. Most of the major
structures came from the previous layout. The new backdrop was painted by
returning member Ray Aliberti, who moved back to the Pacific Northwest
just in time to go to work on the railroad.
Mountain scenery is still a focus on the new layout. The
new staging yard also ensures that there are always trains ready to move
onto the layout. Don Jones and Hank Schmitten prepare trains for our
upcoming open house.
Mike Peterson is seen here doing some final cleanup in
preparation for the open house. The ship model is one of several that will
become a center point of the new harbor area that will greet visitors when
they first enter the layout room.
Once again, mountain scenery rises up practically from the
floor and is more than 10 feet deep in some areas, giving visitors a
sweeping vista. A narrow-gauge logging line is featured along the top of a
mountain ridge.
Ray's mountain scenery is just as dramatic on the new
layout as it was on the former HO-scale layout in downtown Bellingham. We
invite you to visit us in person to see all of our future developments.
