N-scale is a very popular model railway size, and
the BSME builds and operates an beautiful N-scale layout. Although
the term actually refers to the track dimension (N stands for 9
millimeters, which is the distance between the rails), it is often
used to describe the scale as well. Typical N-scale models are 1:160
scale, approximately half the size of HO trains. An advantage
of N-scale is that it allows modelers to build layouts that take up
less space than HO-scale.
Although the BSME's N-scale layout occupies less
than half the space as the HO-scale layout, it has approximately the
same scale miles of track thanks to the smaller scale and the fact
that the N-scale layout is built as a two-level layout—the layout is
actually constructed on two shelf-like levels, connected by a series
of helixes. Construction began on the current layout in April 2004,
shortly after the BSME moved into its current location at 1469
Silver Run Lane in Alger, WA.
